National Treasure

Dripping Springs Ward Newsletter

Somewhere in the second act of National Treasure, Nicolas Cage explains, with total sincerity, that he has to steal the Declaration of Independence in order to protect it. It's the most confident nonsense in film history and it works. Two hours of invisible ink and Masonic clues later, the treasure turns out to be sitting in a forgotten room underneath a church.

The Bible got there first. In 2 Kings 22, King Josiah orders repairs on the temple, and during the renovation the high priest finds a book that had been lost for a generation: the book of the law. The scriptures themselves, pulled out of a construction zone. Josiah reads it, and what he reads changes the whole kingdom.

"He Trusted in the Lord God of Israel" β€” 2 Kings 16–25

This is the one the intro spoiled: Josiah's construction crew finds the lost book of the law during temple repairs, and reading it turns the whole kingdom around. You also get Hezekiah, surrounded by the entire Assyrian army, deciding to trust the Lord anyway. Read it this week and you'll be a full act ahead of Nicolas Cage. See you Sunday.
